Ashwin declares his retirement from international cricket, saying, "This will be my last day."
Ashwin only participated in one of
the first three Test matches of the current series in Australia, going 1 for 53
in the day-night match in Adelaide.
At the conclusion of the third Test
of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Brisbane, R Ashwin declared his
decision to retire from international cricket with immediate effect. He is
scheduled to depart for India on Thursday.
At a press conference following the Brisbane Test, Ashwin declared, "This
will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international
level." "This will be the last day [for India], but I would like to
express that and probably show it off in club-level cricket. I do feel like I
have some punch left in me as a cricketer.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed
myself. Even though I have lost some of my teammates [from the India team] in
recent years, I have to admit that I have made a lot of memories with Rohit
[Sharma] and a few of my other teammates. I'm going to mark this as the day I
played at this level because we're the last group of originals, if we can call
ourselves that, to be excluded from the dressing room." There are
obviously many people to thank, but if I didn't acknowledge the BCCI and my
teammates, I would be failing in my responsibilities. A number of them. I'd like
to mention some of them. Every coach who has participated in the trip. Above
all, Rohit,
"I would also like to express
my gratitude to the Australian cricket team, who have been extremely
competitive. It has been fun to play against them.
"Very emotional moment," Ashwin said, adding that he would not be
answering any questions from the media and was only there to announce the news.
I don't believe I'm in a position to provide appropriate answers to the
questions. I apologize for that. We appreciate you being the journalists you
have been, writing both positive and, of course, occasionally negative things.
I believe we would have that relationship indefinitely, and I hope future
cricket players will experience the same level of affection."
Finally, he stated that he would
continue to be involved in cricket, perhaps not only as a player in the TNPL
(Dindigul Dragons) or IPL (he currently plays for Chennai Super Kings).
"See you shortly. I have just stopped it as a cricket player. This game
has given me everything, so I might continue to be involved with it."
He will play for CSK in the 2025 Indian Premier League after being purchased by
his first IPL team, CSK, for INR 9.75 crore at the mega auction last month.
As Ashwin made his press conference, Rohit sat next to him
and remarked, "I don't think too many questions should be asked or raised
because some decisions are very personal. Someone like Ashwin, who has
supported us for so many years, is free to make those kinds of decisions on his
own, and we as teammates must respect that. If a player has [made] a decision,
he must be given that choice. He knew exactly what he wanted to do, and the
team fully supported his way of thinking.
Since there is currently a little
lag [between tests], it is imperative that we as a team get back together and
gather our thoughts on this. We have some time to consider our next course of
action. Speaking of Ash, however, he was absolutely certain of his choice.
"When I arrived in Perth, I learned about the retirement plan. This has
been on his mind ever since, and there are undoubtedly many factors that
contributed to it, even though I was obviously absent for the first three or
four days of the first Test match. Although I'm fairly certain Ash will be able
to respond to that, he is aware of the team's thoughts and

action. Regarding Ash, however, he was absolutely certain of his choice. When I
arrived in Perth, I was informed [of the retirement plan].
"However, we had a conversation
when I got to Perth, and I managed to persuade him to stay for the pink-ball
Test match. After that, it just happened so that if he thought I wasn't needed
in the series at the moment, I'd be better off leaving the game."However,
since we haven't visited Melbourne yet, we are obviously unsure of the
conditions and combination to be expected there. However, we should respect Ash
enough to let him think this way if that is what he believes, keeping him in
mind in particular. Furthermore, we ought to all agree with his current viewpoint.
"That's what I'm thinking at
the moment, and Gautam Gambhir and I have also had conversations like that.
When a player like him, who has played for the Indian team for a long time and
has been a real match-winner for us, is given the freedom to make those choices
on his own, it's important. If it was now, then so be it."
With 537 wickets at an average of 24 in 106 Tests, Ashwin
finishes his Test career as India's second-highest wicket-taker in the format,
trailing only Anil Kumble, who finished with 619 wickets from 132 Tests. He
took 1 for 53 in the day-night match in Adelaide, but he only participated in
one of the first three Test matches of the current series in Australia. Ashwin
had taken just nine wickets at an average of 41.22 in the previous series,
which ended in a 3-0 loss to New Zealand at home. Ashwin will be 39 by the time
India's next home season rolls around because he isn't a regular in the
starting lineup for their away Test series against England.
Ashwin was one of 11 all-rounders with
more than 3000 runs and 300 wickets, having amassed 3503 Test runs with six
hundreds and 14 fifties in addition to his wickets. He also tied Muthiah
Muralidaran with a record 11 Player-of-the-Series honors.
Ashwin played 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is during his international career, which
began in 2010 and included the victory in the 50-over World Cup in 2011. He
took 156 wickets in ODIs (average of 33.20) and 72 wickets in T20Is (economy
rate of 6.90). However, since playing in an ODI World Cup match against
Australia in Chennai in October 2023, he has not participated in white-ball
cricket for India.
