"2024 in
Review: Indian Women’s Cricket Team Shines at Home, Struggles Abroad, and
Welcomes Fresh Faces"
A mixed bag for the Indian women's
team: dominant at home, subpar on foreign soil, and a lot of new faces In 2024,
Team India experienced many ups and downs. As the top women's cricket team in
the subcontinent, they achieved some historic feats with their dominant series
victories at home, but once they left the country, they looked lost,
disorganized, and even ignorant.
Additionally, they performed exceptionally well in bilaterals, but they lost
multination competitions. Despite the fact that up to ten players made their
debuts this year, India failed to win the first-ever ICC trophy in the senior
women's division.
Let's take a look back at the Indian
women's cricket team's highs and lows from the previous season as we move into
2025.
Bangladesh whitewashed: A five-T20I tour of Bangladesh kicked off India's
schedule. The series served as a prelude to the major ICC event, allowing India
to get used to the conditions before the Women's T20 World Cup was scheduled to
take place there.
With a 5-0 thumping, the visitors gave Bangladesh a hard time. The T20 World
Cup's dress rehearsal was sadly in vain because the competition had to be moved
to the United Arab Emirates because of widespread indignation.
Record-Breaking Series Against South
Africa: The Indian women's cricket team made history by setting the
highest-ever team total in women's Test cricket following a 3-0 thumping of the
Proteas women in the ODIs. India beat Australia's record of 575/9 with an
incredible total of 603/6.
The highlights of the one-off Test were Sneh Rana's 10-wicket match haul,
Shafali Verma's double century, and Smriti Mandhana's outstanding hundred and
their highest ever in women's Test cricket. After that, India drew the
three-match T20I series, with one match being rained out.
Heartbreaks in the Asia Cup and T20
World Cup: India lost both multi-nation competitions last year after dominating
the home conditions. They had a strong Asian run and were one of the two
undefeated teams going into the finals, behind Sri Lanka. They were unable to
defend the title, though, after losing by 8 wickets to Chamari Athapaththu
& Co. in the finals.
Harmanpreet Kaur and company had an even worse time at the next T20 World Cup.
They were eliminated from the tournament after suffering a devastating loss to
New Zealand in their opening match of the season and then losing to their old
rivals, Australia, by nine runs. Another year went by with no senior women's
cricket ICC trophy.
Redemption against New Zealand:
India turned their attention to the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup following a
dismal campaign in the United Arab Emirates. They hosted a three-match ODI
series against New Zealand. With seven wickets, Radha Yadav became the series'
highest wicket-taker, and all-rounder Deepti Sharma was named Player of the
Series.
Biting the dust in Australia: India lost an ODI series in Australia 0–3,
exposing their weaknesses after yet another international tour. While the
management experimented with various top-order strategies, such as bringing
back Priya Punia and elevating Richa Ghosh to the position of opener, Shafali
was removed from the series. However, nothing went their way.
Finishing the year in style: India
dominated the bilateral series against the West Indies, which was their last
assignment of the year. The blue-clad women set multiple records and won the
Twenty20 Internationals 2-1.
In the third game of the series, Richa Ghosh equaled the record for the fastest
fifty in women's Twenty20 Internationals with a scorching 18-ball half-century.
Her innings contributed to India's highest-ever T20I total of 217/4.
Later, India's string of outstanding performances in the ODIs completely
destroyed the Windies. With 160 runs in 3 innings, Harleen Deol became the
series' highest scorer and achieved her first WODI century.

Most Runs: Indian batsmen led the
scoring charts in 2024, despite their poor performance abroad. Smiriti Mandhana
finished the year as the top run scorer with 747 runs in 13 WODIs, including
four hundreds and three fifties. With 763 runs in 23 games, including eight
fifties, she is also at the top of the WT20Is rankings.
Most wickets: The Indians also maintained their dominance on the bowler's
lists. With 24 wickets in 13 games at an average of 19.83, Deepti Sharma
finished the year as the highest wicket-taker in WODIs. With 30 wickets in 23
games, she also held the record for most wickets taken by India in the shortest
format.
Mission ODI World Cup 2025: A Look
Ahead
The highs of 2024 demonstrated the team's enormous potential and the sport's
rising popularity, while the lows served as a sobering reminder of the
difficulties facing Indian women's cricket.
A bright future is promised by the rise of up-and-coming talent like Ghosh and
the guidance of more seasoned players like Mandhana and Kaur. Building
consistency, developing talent, and making sure the team performs up to par in
the forthcoming ODI World Cup at home will surely be the main priorities for
Indian women's cricket as it moves into 2025.
