Live Updates: Wildfire in Los Angeles | Joe Biden cancels his last trip ...
Live updates on the wildfire in Los
Angeles: In order to address California fires, Joe Biden cancels his last trip
to Italy as president of the United States.
On Wednesday, wildfires fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds tore through the
region, engulfing Los Angeles in chaos. As flames consumed homes and landmarks
like Temescal Canyon and portions of the Palisades Charter High School, the
Pacific Palisades, which is home to multimillion-dollar homes, saw severe
devastation. The skies turned ominously dark as the infernos were accompanied
by dramatic smoke plumes that could be seen for miles.
A fire near a nature preserve forced
elderly residents, some of whom were in wheelchairs, to evacuate in an
emergency and wait in parking lots until help arrived, exposing the inland
foothills. In the meantime, residents of Pacific Palisades encountered
obstacles as roads were clogged by abandoned vehicles. They used a bulldozer to
make room for emergency vehicles.
High winds—which in some places reached 100 mph—and dry conditions made it
harder for firefighters to contain the fire. Off-duty firefighters were asked
to assist with the evacuation of more than 30,000 residents and the power
outage of 200,000. The strong winds prevented aerial firefighting, leaving
ground crews overburdened.
While President Biden canceled his
plans to visit Riverside County and instead approved federal relief, Governor
Newsom issued a state of emergency. Parts of Malibu were reduced to ashes as
the fires burned through well-known neighborhoods and over well-known
thoroughfares like Sunset Boulevard. As winds fueled the fire, locals reported
transformers exploding and embers flying through the air.
Firefighters are still fighting for time to save lives and property, with
little respite from the relentless weather conditions, as there is no sign of
rain and red flag warnings are still in effect.
