India Eyes FPV Drone Future After Ukraine’s Operation Spider’s Web
India is ramping up its FPV (First-Person View) drone capabilities following Ukraine’s bold use of the technology in “Operation Spider’s Web.” In a coordinated strike, Ukraine deployed 117 FPV drones to target Russian airbases, reportedly destroying over 40 aircraft, including nuclear-capable bombers. This operation has sparked global attention, highlighting the effectiveness of low-cost drone warfare in modern conflicts.
Learning from this, the Indian Army has begun indigenous production of kamikaze FPV drones, each costing around ₹1.4 lakh. These drones, equipped with anti-tank warheads, offer a budget-friendly yet powerful alternative to conventional weapons. Over 100 units have already been built at the Rising Star Drone Battle School, with more in the pipeline.
India is also upgrading soldier training to include drone detection, electronic jamming, and physical interception techniques. At the same time, development of advanced counter-drone systems like the Bhargavastra is underway to provide layered air defense.
Defense experts emphasize the importance of adapting to this new age of warfare. India’s dual approach—offensive drone capability and defensive preparedness—reflects a strategic shift aimed at ensuring battlefield superiority in future conflicts.
The drone war era has arrived, and India is preparing to lead, not follow.
